back when ‘cut and paste’ actually meant scissors & glue, i was cutting pictures out of magazines & books in greenwich village, ny, alongside my father & collage artist, JOHN A. SHOWN. (living the last decade of his life in mexico, he died in nov of 2001)

how could i have known at the age of 3, that my first collage, ‘pickle man’, would be the beginning of a long standing love affair with ephemera & all things shiny.
though i am aware that ‘photoshop’ exists, i still prefer to use scissors & glue.

i like the act of collection & assemblage; the feel of paper as it passes through the blades of a good sharp pair of scissors. i also use a single edge razor on a rubber mat when needed & a small piece of smooth plastic to burnish, squeezing out air bubbles.

pretty low key & compact; my work tends to be the size of, if not smaller than, a sheet of paper. hundreds, & yes, i do have hundreds, of 2D collage fit in a single binder box.

the 3D collage work takes considerably more room, though the boxes themselves are just under 6 x 8 inches. i have used everything from cigar boxes to vegetable crates, but i enjoy the ease & uniformity of readymade glass front shadow boxes for the 3D assemblage.

contents? an absurd amount of very small found objects, cataloged in an equally absurd amount of labeled drawers. my studio looks like a victorian apothecary. just how I like it; compartmentalized.

i’ll be adding to the back catalog of collage for you to peruse & to purchase, if you desire, so please check back from time to time, to see what has made its way onto the site.
thank you for your continued interest & support
